Life Afloat

The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.
                                          --- Jacques Cousteau

Darn, rocking again! I’m trying to draw a straight line but my living room keeps rocking from side to side. I’m working on an illustration for my next picture-book. But I live on a boat and that means rocking is a regular occurrence. Like Monsieur Pierre, the octopus stars of my new children’s picture book, the water is my home. Pierre lives in a Paris fountain; I live on a motor yacht on the San Francisco Bay.

I’m often asked what it’s like to live on a boat.  What makes it unique is what makes it wonderful: constant awareness of the sea, the weather, marine life. Others may have cars, buses, joggers and bicyclists going past their home. I have paddle-boarders, rays, sailboats, seals, ferrys, pelicans. At night I hear night herons fishing off my dock and watch the moon rise above the glinting waves on the outgoing tide.

This boat home is quite comfortable: a large salon with a 360 degree bay view; luxury baths; full-size laundry and kitchen [aka “galley”]. There’s no lawn to mow but there are two engine rooms!  And yes, when a big storm blows in from the south, the boat rocks quite a bit. That’s the time to put down my drawing and cozy up in the salon to watch the winds and waves. As Jacques Cousteau said, The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.
